RN.FM Radio is Truly Unleashed!

For those of you who follow Digital Doorway regularly, you've no doubt heard about RN.FM Radio, the new internet radio station that was founded by yours truly and two dynamic nurse colleagues early in 2012. The official moniker of the station, "RN.FM Radio: Nursing Unleashed", is an apt title as the show continues to draw high-quality guests and engender energetic and enlightening conversation.

Seven Years of Digital Doorway

Well, it may seem like a blink of an eye at times, but Digital Doorway has been alive and well for seven years today, born from a simple suggestion by my prescient brother as we sat in front of the woodstove on a snowy New England night. I can hardly believe that so much time has passed since that January day when I dived headfirst into the blogging world with no idea of where I was going or, honestly, what I was doing.

When Digital Doorway launched, it was not clear to me that it would be a blog mostly about nursing. Although my online moniker at the time was indeed "Nurse Keith", I had no notion of branding, hadn't heard of SEO (Search Engine Optimization), and the blogosphere was an enormous and cavernous unknown.

Over time, Digital Doorway began to distill itself into a somewhat more cohesive entity, and 1520 posts later, it has become one of the more well-known blogs in the nursing blogosphere,. Yes, it's garnered a fair amount of attention and notoriety over time, although it's still somewhat small potatoes compared to the blogging giants out there. (You know who you are!)

Back in the day, I didn't know about keywords and never gave much thought to such things. In all actuality, I still don't write my posts with keywords in mind, and I just let my blog's relative influence online do the job. However, with hundreds of backlinks that point here to Digital Doorway, it's a given that my writing will have a moderate audience out there in blogland. That said, with my new mentors, colleagues and friends over at RN.FM Radio, keywords, SEO and such animals are now making their way into my lexicon and writing practice, and as we grow RN.FM Radio and its cousin LLC, Unbound Media Group, our presence online as coaches, bloggers and nurse entrepreneurs is sure to grow. And no doubt that Digital Doorway will itself benefit from that vertical and horizontal expansion.

As NurseKeith.com continues its slow and steady launch, Digital Doorway is becoming the repository of much more focused thoughts on nursing, the profession's present and future, new books on nursing. and the impact that coaching can have on nurses' lives, among other topics of note. I look forward to continuing to deliver quality content that's informative, timely, and easy to read (and perhaps periodically entertaining).

Thank you for supporting Digital Doorway. Thanks for reading, thanks for the many comments, for following me on Facebook and Twitter, and for the encouraging words I've received since launching NurseKeith.com.

Yes, it's been a long, strange trip, and I have a feeling 2012 will be no different. Come along for the ride, and let's see what the next seven years brings!

Happy Birthday to Emergiblog!

I want to take this opportunity to say Happy Fourth Birthday to Kim and her blogging brain-child Emergiblog. Kim birthed Emergiblog four years ago, and like one of my blogger colleagues said in a recent email, she is a force to be reckoned with.

Emergiblog is on the top of many lists of the best health, medicine and nursing blogs, and Kim has strengthened her spot as a top blogger by creating the inimitable and widely recognized Change of Shift, a blog carnival devoted---but not limited---to all things nursing.

This is simply a moment to reflect on the gifts that Kim has given to the world with her passion for writing, blogging, Health 2.0 and nursing, and I thank her from the bottom of my heart for all she has done to advance our collective cause.

Happy Birthday, Kim and Emergiblog---and many more!

Digital Doorway Ranked #38 Health Blog on Wikio!

I am humbled to discover that Digital Doorway is now ranked the 38th most referenced health care blog on the web by Wikio. Previously ranked #65 for some time, Digital Doorway took a quantum leap of 27 points to land at #38, and I am extremely grateful for this honor.

According to an article on BloggerBuster, the Europe-based Wikio ranks blogs based solely on the number of times a blog is referenced within posts on other blogs. On the other hand, Technorati (the most popular and well-known blog aggregator) ranks blogs based on references, backlinks, and blogrolls on other blogs.

Digital Doorway has been referenced on many "best of" lists over the years, and I am eternally thankful for every mention, blogroll, backlink, and other honor that readers choose to bestow. Blogging has been quite an education for me, and I look forward to continued surprises and successes as the years (blog)roll by.

Best,

Keith

Digital Doorway Celebrates 4 Years!

Well, time flies in the blogging world, my friends, and today Digital Doorway turns four years old! Born in January of 2005 at the suggestion of my ever-supportive older brother, it's hard to believe that this blog has been in existence for so many years, with an average of 250 posts per year.

While this blog has centered mostly around thoughts on nursing, medicine, health care, and my professional experiences in nursing, I have also tried to imbue it with some philosophy, spirituality, notes on American culture, and stories of my own personal life and world. I always hope that the multifaceted nature of my posts is interesting enough for my readers, and although many nurses appear to read Digital Doorway, I also seem to have readers who are not directly connected to medicine or nursing.

Looking back, Digital Doorway has certainly provided me with a wonderful forum for honing my craft of writing, and has actually garnered enough attention to receive several award nominations specifically for bloggers, an honor that I do not take for granted.

Beyond awards, blogging here has indeed brought me paid work as a writer, both online and in print, as well as opportunities to feed this blog to other popular websites. Another version of Digital Doorway runs over at Alensa.com, and everything I write on DD feeds directly to my author page on Wellsphere.com. My online presence as a nurse blogger has also brought me the opportunity to be published in two recent books of non-fiction by nurses recently released by Kaplan Publishing: "Reflections on Doctors" and "Final Moments". Most recently, I am now contributing content as an "Expert Blogger" for BlackDoctor.org, as well. I am also quite content to regularly be included in two venerable and respected blog carnivals of nursing and medicine, Change of Shift and Grand Rounds.

Over all, blogging has been an exhilarating, gratifying and tremendously worthwhile experience. Digital Doorway has taken on a life of its own, and I am personally pleased with its current state of being. While I would love to have more comments and active give and take with readers, I understand that people are very busy, overwhelmed with the amount of information at their fingertips, and I am extremely gratified that anyone at all takes the time to read what I have to say.

Whether you are a regular reader, a first-time visitor, or a reader who wanders by from time to time, I thank you sincerely for visiting Digital Doorway, and I have no doubt that this blog will see many more birthdays as it continues to develop, satisfying both my need to write and (hopefully) your desire to read. It is an honor to blog about my life, work, and place in the world, and I am grateful for all of the company I have had---and will have---along the way.

With gratitude,

Keith
