Nurses spend a great deal of time providing care for others, and even in non-clinical roles they carry many psychoemotional weights on their shoulders. Nurses give physical care (including that which is immediately life-saving), compassionate connection, and spiritual succor, often in the form of motivational conversation and nurse-to-patient teaching.
What is a powerful way for us nurses to empower and elevate our understanding of human behavior, the human condition, and the nature of suffering? By assiduously doing our own inner work throughout a long lifetime of giving, loving, and feeling.
Career advice -- and commentary on current healthcare news and trends for savvy 21st-century nurses and healthcare providers -- from holistic nurse career coach Keith Carlson, RN, BSN, NC-BC. Since 2005.

Jump Aboard the Nurse Wellness Express
Once upon a time, I was talking on the phone with a colleague who is not a nurse himself but who interacts with nurses on a regular basis in his professional life. His comments about nurses and their self-care (or lack thereof) were extremely thought-provoking.

What's Nurse Career Coaching, Anyway?
When I encounter nurses online, or at meetings and nursing
conferences, they often want to know what career coaching for nurses is
really about and if it can truly help them. I generally reply that, yes,
career coaching can be a powerful resource for most nurses, and I
describe what I actually do in my role as a coach.

Got Soul, Nurses?
Nurses, what does it mean to have soul? Does it mean that you've read "Chicken Soup For The Nurse's Soul"? Does it mean that you listen and dance to James Brown? Does it mean that you cook with spicy food?
Well, it could mean those things, but it's a whole lot more.

Speaking To The Nurse's Heart
On this Valentine's Day, I'd like to speak directly to the nurse's
heart, sending my support, compassion and gratitude on this special day
that focuses on love.

Of Flu Season and Nurse Martyrs
Nurses are often notorious for being martyrs, caring for others when they really need to be caring for themselves. And when flu season strikes, many nurses may heed the call of duty rather than the call of their own bed.

Nursing and Happiness Are Not Mutually Exclusive
Many recent clients who have come to me for coaching are curious how to actually get what they want. Sometimes it seems we nurses are simply convinced that we need to work too hard for too many hours without being happy. This seems like a given in the profession, and some nurses see no way to create satisfaction and balance in their personal and professional lives. So is it possible to be happy as a nurse?

Evolving As A Nurse: The Work of the Soul
The evolution of a nurse and his or her career is a very individual experience, and this experience expresses the spirit, nature and personality of the nurse in question. And when soul is infused into that journey, the entire tenor of the journey is deeply and irrevocably changed.

Nurses: Compassion For The Self
Nurses, when you consider the level of compassion with which you treat your patients, do you also consider the possibility that you can treat yourself with that same compassion? Do you feel that you deserve it?

Burnout, Recovery and Work-Life Balance for Nurses
This weekend, I'm speaking at a regional nursing conference here in New Mexico, and the subjects of my two talks are burnout (prevention and recovery) and work-life balance. It's a sad reality that nurses need to hear about these particular issues so often, but as long as they do, I'm willing to get on that stage and preach the gospel of self-care.

The Nurse's Personal Dashboard: Tune Up Time?
I recently posted here on Digital Doorway about each of us having our own personal dashboard. While that post made metaphoric mention of the speedometer, tachometer, fuel and lubrication, we didn't talk about the need for a timely tune up. So, let's take that metaphor and run with it, shall we?

Self Care: Between Flood and Drought
When we’re examining our lives and the ways in which we are
manifesting--or not manifesting--our optimal life vision, it’s important to be
clear, honest and erring on the side of self-love and compassion. Being alive
in the 21st century is no simple task, and we can easily be
sidetracked and distracted from living in balance and wholeness.
My friend and visionary colleague Carol Gino has often used
the term “soul drought” to more
accurately describe the experience of burnout, and this notion of spiritual
drought is one that speaks deeply to me.

The Nurse's Personal Dashboard
On a recent episode of RN.FM Radio, we were discussing nurses' wellness--both spiritual and physical--and the concept of one's personal "dashboard" came up in the course of the conversation. Are you aware that you have your own dashboard, and if so, do you heed the warning lights that occasionally light up?

The Nurse and The Razor's Edge
When she looks at me and smiles, it’s a small victory.
When she moves her bowels, there's much rejoicing.
When a shower is accomplished, there’s a sense of
satisfaction.
When her condition remains stable for weeks on end, we
relax.
When things become more tenuous, we’re vigilant.
And when we're vigilant, we can lose sight of ourselves.

Nurse Self Care: The Secret Ingredient
In my coaching practice, I talk to so many nurses who seem to burn out and hate their work when they don't put their own needs first. Nurses appear to have an ingrained sense that they must subjugate their own needs to the needs of their patients and loved ones. This is a belief and a practice that must change in order to prevent burnout and increase work-life balance and satisfaction.

What Do Nurses Glean From Coaching?
When I work with nurses via my coaching practice at NurseKeith.com, there are a variety of life aspects upon which we can focus. Whether it's addressing work-life balance or managing a change in the trajectory of their careers, nurses come to coaching for many reasons, but the goal is always centered on what the client truly wants.

Self Compassion and Empathy
Last night on RN.FM Radio, nurse and well-known author Carol Gino spoke eloquently about the need for nurses to develop self compassion before they can truly experience empathy for their patients. She was so right.
