That is indeed imperative.

Let's see how things develop over the next few years.

Thanks for commenting!

Keith "Nurse Keith" Carlson, RN, BSN, NC-BChttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03581947410641941224noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10246967.post-11338894654795261832013-01-08T12:57:42.130-05:002013-01-08T12:57:42.130-05:00I have to disagree, almost 100%. The hospitals were already not filling vacant positions then and were simply increasing the nurse to patient ratio.

Yes, nurses are leaving the profession at a slower rate, but people aren't getting as sick for long periods of time either. Since more people have taken an active role in their health, they aren't getting sick as often. Yes, they are living longer.... AND healthier lives.

Hospital admissions are down overall. My last job was at a county-owned hospital (which is turning non-profit in July). One wing of that hospital was only partial filled when I was hired and when I left, it was completely closed. People just weren't coming to the hospital and it had virtually no competition.

The jobs that are opening up, are filled immediately by the current glut of graduates.

What I would like to see is students being given more of a realistic view of what the nursing profession is... ALL aspects of it. I'd rather scare them in the beginning than to see students get to the end, graduate, get their first job and decide the profession is not for them because they don't want to do the dirty work. Yes, as a nurse there are a wide variety of positions available, BUT usually the first job post graduation is in direct patient care. I'd like to see more students ready for the shock of the real world of nursing vs the bubble of nursing school. That could also open up more spots in the programs for people that understand that nursing is a good profession, but not typically a glamorous one.Gloria Attar RN BSNhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02615238275868599367noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10246967.post-43354055955996796372012-12-24T00:13:56.646-05:002012-12-24T00:13:56.646-05:00I agree 100% with every word of this!!
