Lunar eclipse
when the rust-colored orb
graces the sky---
so three-dimensional
as it dances in the shadow of Earth.

I wander the neighborhood
catching glimpses of the stars
and planets
which hang in the cold air
like distant lanterns.

Sunlight on the moon's edge,
a glowing fingernail---
and fleeting.

What power
and mystery,
even to the modern mind---
Imagine the terror, the
ignorant blissful terror
when humans first saw such a sight,
primordial fears
rushing from gut to evolving brain.

Now its power
although explained by science
and critical insight
is by no means diminished
as its beauty and stark glow
light the sky with wonder.
